Madikwe Game Reserve, currently 75,000 ha in size, is the fifth largest game reserve in South Africa and is home to the ‘Big Five’ (lions, elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, and buffalo), as well as cheetah and wild dog. Uniquely, Madikwe is managed by three governing entities: the North West Parks and Tourism board, the local community, and private bodies. Madikwe is situated in the North West province of South Africa on the Botswana border, in the transition zone between the Lowveld bushveld and arid Kalahari thornveld. The land was previously used for farming but transformed into a reserve in 1991. Around 10,000 mammals were relocated here from national parks, and the reserve currently has 66 large mammal species and around 300 bird species. The habitat includes open grassland plains, woodlands, rocky outcrops and mountains.
