Gilbert’s potoroo or Ngilgyte (Potorus gilbertii) is a small rat-kangaroo marsupial found on the south coast of Western Australia and was considered extinct from the early 1900s until it was rediscovered in 1994 at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve east of Albany. It is considered the world’s rarest marsupial and one of Australia’s most threatened mammals, with only 100 individuals known to be alive.
Western ground parrots or Kyloring (Pezoporus flaviventris), a medium-sized, slim and mostly green parrot that is rarely seen and found only on the south coast of Western Australia. Has suffered from large range restrictions in the last twenty years and as such s considered one of Australia’s most threatened birds, with only 150 estimated to be left in the wild
The western ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus occidentalis) or Ngwayir is a medium-sized marsupial with a stocky build, dark greyish-brown fur, pale underparts and a long prehensile tail with a whitish tip, mainly arboreal it can often seen walking in front of the cameras. Occurring throughout the South-West of WA in low abundance, Two Peoples Bay is the most eastern extent of their range.
Carnaby's cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris) or Malak is a long lived large black cockatoo that is declining in population abundnace and demographic. They are identified by their white tail panels, cheeks and small bill and our found in South-West WA from Geraldton to East of Esperance.
The noisy scrub-bird (Atrichornis clamosus) or Djimalak is an elusive ground dwelling song bird that is endemic to the South Coast. This charasmatic little bird has a big voice in breeding season with the male territory song reading over 100db.
The quokka (Setonix brachyurus) is a small wallaby that is found throughout the South-West of WA. This species is most famous for the smiling selfies they take on Rottnest Island, however these individuals have nothing on the smiling individuals found on the South Coast.
The western bristlebird (Dasyornis longirostris) or Booderitj is a medium-sized brown, ground-dwelling songbird with short wings and a long tail. It is endemic to the South Coast coastal reserves.
The western whipbird (Psophodes nigrogularis) or Darding is a medium-sized olive-grey terrestrial bird with long tail and pointed crest, it is endemic to the South Coast and is found in thick heath and dense bushland.
